Le Bec Fin, I'm taking myself there for graduation in the Spring. BIG BUCKS. It was rated the number one resturant in the country.

Other great places...
Dmitri's @ 3rd & Catherine in Queen Village, BYOB, great food, close and crowded but fun atmosphere.

Pamplona @ 12th and Locust in Center City. I work there, eat the food all the time and still would go there as a customer. Serves meditearanean style food, very delicious. Serves Stoudt's beer and spanish wines. Same owner as Dmitri's. 627-9050.

The Victor Cafe, South Philly. Above average food. Great atmosphere. All the waitrons sing opera during the course of service.

The White Dog Cafe. My personal favorite. Unique menu. Political themes abound. UPenn crowd. Funky gift shop attached. Reservations a must. Sansom St between 36th and 34th.

Le Bec Fin IS extremely expensive. For gourmet food at considerably less cost, try Janine's Bistro...It's located on Front Street near Market, just above La Truffe. La Truffe has been around forever and the food is great, but it's very expensive. The owners opened the bistro upstairs and have managed to give great food at lower cost. The atmosphere is exactly what you'd expect from a true French bistro...very nice and relaxed.

White Dog Cafe and Zocalo's in University City are both good deals, interesting menus. Susanna Foo's in Center City is a fairly interesting but expensive Chinese restaurant that IMHO doesn't live up to its reputation...but some people adore it. Le Bec Fin is, as others have noted, stratospherically expensive. Zanzibar Blue is a decent restaurant with a jazz bar attached to it, nice if you like the music.

our favorite chinese *in* Chinatown: Tang Yean - 10th Street between
Race & Vine. Seafood, poultry, vegetarian. No pork/red meat.

outside of Chinatown: Tang's, South Street between 4th & 5th.
Try anything in the Ginger & Scallion sauce.

OTHER good Philadelphia restaurants are Michel's on Walnut, The Striped Bass, (all fish, very expensive) also on Walnut, The Dock Street Brew Pub, just off the Parkway, interesting menu, great beer, moderate prices. DiLullo's, also expensive.

since i just re-read the original post and realized the poster was interested in gourmet food ... Jack's Firehouse on Fairmount comes to mind. everything is totally fresh, they don't even have a freezer. also at least 18 different wines by the glass.

Good (center city) restaurants I'd go to with an expense account:

The Palm at the Bellevue - Broad & Walnut
Striped Bass - 15th & Walnut
The Fountain - Four Seasons Hotel, One Logan Square Ruth's Chris Steak House, 260 S. Broad Morton's - One Logan Square

All excellent, all have atmospheres suited to busines-types...
