Better than any of the Mt Washington restaurants I've visited; better than anything downtown. Their chef has a superb ability with sauces; the wine list is decent and the desserts are good. The wait staff is friendly and attentive and the atmoshere is aesthetically eclectic, but not fussy. Dinners range from $8 (pastas) to $17. I love the Chicken with Lump Crab (in a blackberry brandy sauce), the Chicken Louisianne (with artichoke heats, concasse tomatoes and a white wine cream sauce) and the Shrimp and Scallops Newport. Order a bottle of Napa Ridge Pinot Noir ($26); it's tannic bite and nutmeg flavor go well with everything on the menu. Last night I had the Tularia (sp?) in Parchment ...cooked with julienned carrots, onions and celery, fresh herbs and lemon. Excellent! The only thing I fault them for is their rice pilaf...a bit overcooked and lacking flavor. Order another side dish (they usually have a pasta with marinara).

REALLY GOOD DINNER IN PGH?

It may not have the fancy atmosphere of some of the "better" restaurants, but it clearly has the best food. My compliments to Chef Garth. -mje
I like the 1889 Cafe, but I must admit that I can't believe it's on *anyone's* Best of Pittsburgh list! Typically, my wife and I use it as a backup when the City Grill is too busy. My *favorite* restaurants in this area, not in any particular order: Scoglio's Italian (downtown). There are actually two of these, one in Fifth Avenue Place, and one on Grant St, more uptown. Very good Italian food; try the Chicken Therese (chicken with lemon butter sauce). Other good Italian include Piccolo Piccolo, Giovanni's (Southside), and Pasta Piatto. Frankly, good Italian restaurants are the only restaurants Pittsburgh has in abundance. I was really annoyed when a decent Mexican restaurant near the southern Borders turned into yet another Italian restaurant some years back. We have enough of those! Southwestern Bistro (6th St, downtown). This place is awesome! All sorts of Southwestern U.S. fare. Highly recommended. Try their Red Pepper Pasta! Fajita Grill (near Century 3 mall). By *far* the best Mexican in the area. Until this place opened, there was essentially *no* Mexican food in the city worthy of the name. I haven't found anything on the menu I don't like. Suzie's (Squirrel Hill and downtown). Good Greek food. Mallorca (Southside). Great Spanish food. I found this place as good as the best Spanish places I've been to in NYC. Very busy on weekend nights. Try anything with their garlic sauce; it's awesome, as is their paella.
