 Bobbie,

 There's a new diner on Rt 51 called Georgie's Diner. It's located
between the exit from Rt 279 and the first stoplight. They've got the
full selection of diner food, plus they appear (at least from the taste
of the grilled food) to have a real charcoal grill (maybe it's a gas
grill, but boyo is it good).

 toodles, gretchen

 Bobbie: I love breakfast at the Dor-Stop in Dormont - it's a family-run
business - they make great pancakes (get the weekend special with the
walnut pancakes). I haven't tried anything other than breakfast food,
but they are very friendly, and it's right on Potomac in Dormont - only
problem is they are closed on Sundays.

I've been there twice and found it dismal. The first time I went, I
was really sick and just wanted some soup. Even in my
not-able-to-taste-anything state, I thought the soup was awful (salty
and thick from evaporation). The service was not so great, but it's a
diner and bad service is de riguer.

But it's so close to where I live, and I am too often ready for dinner
at about 10:30 or 11 pm, so I tried it again. The salad I ordered had
brown lettuce in it, the fries were underdone, the lemon pie I ordered
 for dessert was still frozen.

I am a masochist. Chances are good that I'll go back. It's a new
place, no doubt they are still settling in and experiencing growing
 pains. But I don't except to find they've turned into a first-class
diner. The coffee isn't good enough. :-(

Did you ever try the Trolley Bar on Route 88 in Castle Shannon? Only
open breakfast and lunch but it is my favorite.

It sounds like you are talking about the old Trolley Barn at
the junction of Castle Shannon Blvd and Mt Lebanon Blvd (near 88
and only open for breakfast and lunch).
It closed down a few years ago and the site is now a Pizza Hut
 pickup/delivery shop.
