I had dinner at the Point (on Reynold's Street in Point Breeze) last night. Without realizing it, we happened to pick only their second day of business following a ten month closure because of a fire. The food was excellent; reasonably light but satisfying, and with good sized portions. We ordered an appetizer of grilled portabella mushrooms on marinara with feta cheese (on the side, per my request) which was delicious - nearly charred with a slightly smoky flavor from grilling. The daily specials included stuffed flounder du'glere ($13.95), sauteed in a white wine marinara with garlic and scalions and stuffed with roasted garlic, black olives, and artichoke hearts. The stuffing was surprisingly mild in flavor, and did not overpower the flounder. Since everything else we ordered was served in marinara, Julie continued by selecting the chicken bruzzesse ($8.95) (with roasted peppers, mushrooms and artichoke hearts). Actually, the sauce is a secret, but we know it contains white wine and marinara among other ingredients. Dinners range from $5.95 to $13.95, and include salad, bread, and, for the meat and fish entrees, a side dish (our choice between carrots and potatoes last night). By the way, I have to rave about yesterday's salad dressing. It was a tasty vinaigrette made with astonishingly little oil (just the way we like it). The menu is small: Three appetizers, four salads, three pasta and four meat entrees, plus daily seafood specials (three were available yesterday). The wine selection was minimalist, but I expect it will expand as their business resumes. On the downside, much of the limited seating is next to the bar. It did not look like there were any non-smokinng areas (fortunately this was not a problem last night). Also, the sports playing on TV didn't add to the ambiance of a romantic evening, but on the other hand Julie did appreciate the women's volleyball they were showing... Overall, the atmosphere was fine and the food first rate. Oh yes, the service was friendly and prompt. Ken
