I'm fond of the food of the British Isles, so I was quite pleased to
discover that there is a Scottish Pub on the Southside. Piper's Pub is
located on East Carson Street, next to the Burger King (on the 1800 block).
They feature a nice pub menu that includes a number of British and Scottish
dishes, a good beer menu, and a very good Scotch menu.

For lunch I had the bangers and mash: English-style sausages served on
half-mashed potatoes (a nice touch; one other British place I went to in
this area served them on whipped potatoes), with onion gravy. It was quite
good. The sausages were good and the gravy was very tasty. Laurie had the
Shepherd's Pie, which also was good.

Other menu items include Guinness Stew, Toad-in-the-Hole (bangers in
Yorkshire pudding -- though this one unfortunately is a dinner-only item),
chicken and wild mushroom pie, and corned beef and cabbage. They had Scotch
Eggs and Ploughman's Lunch on the appetizer menu. They also have a selection
of more American bar foods, like chicken fingers, burgers, etc.

The beer draft list included both some of the better American beers (Sierra
Nevada Pale Ale and Victory Hop Devil, for example), as well as British
Beers (Fuller's, Newcastle Brown, Bass, Harp) and nitorgentated draughts
(Guinness, Belhaven Scotch Ale, Old Speckled Hen, etc.) They also had a
good selection of beer in bottles.

The Scotch menu was very impressive. Like most places, it was expensive,
though not as bad as some. My desert was a shot of Lagavulin 16 Year Islay,
 which went for $8.

My wife & I are of Scottish decent and decided to try the PP a couple of
months ago. I went there not expecting much, maybe something along the lines
of the Harp & Fiddle -- not that the H&F is bad mind you. We were both very
pleasantly surprised. The food was very good.
