Montemurro's

A friend and I set out for some Asian food in Sharpsburg last night, the
result of picking thorugh our Entertainment coupon book, and discovered
that Saigon Style (1000 N. Canal Street) had closed. They were
renovating the space to turn it into an "upscale eatery and billiard
parlour" according to the man inside the space. (although I can't really
see 'upscale' and 'billiard parlour' being used in the same sentence
 effectively)

We decided to take our coupon book and try another spot in the
neighborhood. We popped into "Montemurro's". Quite a scam they have
running there! Extremely overpriced run-of-the-mill Italian fare. The
food quality is pretty even with your average Minutello's or Pleasure
Bar, but a bit skimpier. We ordered fried zuccini at 3.95 (reasonable
price)...and ended up with six paper thin strips of zuccini on a plate.
For around the same money, you can get a mound of zuccini at places like
The Elbow Room, Big Jim's, Bella Luna (Murrysville), and most other
places offering such an appetizer. We also ordered the fried calamari
appetizer, that was the same price, and about the same portion. The
salad was extremely ordinary. Basic iceberg lettuce, some grated
carrot, one big green olive, one pepperoncini, and very ordinary
peppercorn dressing. The meals all boasted of pizza and garlic bread.
This consisted of four overdone slices of Italian bread...two topped
with tomato sauce and a sprinkling of (maybe) mozzerella cheese, and the
other two topped with butter and a touch of herbs...neither variety was
 terribly tasty or tempting.

Then came the entrees...she ordered broiled scallops...about
 fifteen...nothing special...for 14.95...and I tried the seafood
sampler...one TINY lobster tail (a bit dry), maybe six scallops, one
small piece of broiled fish (about the size of the patty on a McFish),
and one single shrimp...with three small plastic sauce cups containing
tartar sauce, cocktail sauce and butter...for 20.95.

My friend and I were dressed casually (but more toward the 'dress' end
of casual)...and when I saw the prices I felt a bit under dressed...that
is, until the other tables started to fill...older guy with jean shorts
and white socks pulled nearly up to his thighs...another younger guy
with the ballcap on backwards, white t-shirt...

The waitress was helpful and pleasant, but seemed from a trailer park
somewhere...talked of having tossed out her first hubby, dressing to the
 teeth, and heading for 'Rico's'...

Very scary dining experience! Even with the Entertainment Card, the
bill came to 45.00...and we could have had the same quality at
 Minutellos.

 Just thought I'd share.

Wow, had you simply walked up three or four doors from the ex-Saigon
Style, you would have had a terrific Italian meal at the Grand Canal for
about 5 dollars less, sans the coupon book.

You apparently have not been there in a while - been gone about 5
years now. Monterey Bay Fish Grotto is there now - a great place.
