Mediterranean Grill

I have only eaten food from the Mediterranean Grill once and after that
unpleasant experience I would be reluctant to go back. A friend at work
went there to get take-out for our lunch. I got the moussaka. This stuff
was incredible! There was about a 3/4 inch thick layer of a sickly brownish
gray paste (and I *do* mean PASTE) on top. This is apparently their
version of the normal bechamel sauce that everyone else in the world uses.
It was disgusting in taste, texture, and color. The meat and vegetable
combination underneath was mediocre at best. They used zucchini instead
of eggplant and it also had potatoes in it. I wouldn't have minded that
if I had expected it and if the flavor had been really good. My friend says
that she and friend of hers have eaten there a number of times and every-
thing was always very good. Did I just get them on the days they hired a
new, really bad, chef? Do my friend and her friends just have lead palates?

No, you're right. The Mediterranean Grill is a very poor restaurant.
Many readers of pgh.food like it.

On a brighter note, I'd like to repeat my recommendation for Jamaica Jamaica
(5th Ave) uptown. It's an excellent Carribean restaurant (better than the
ones I've tried in NY and DC :-) ). The decor is ghastly (and sexist). Try
to concentrate on your food instead.

Indeed. I strongly recommend the Jagan fried rice (fried rice, Jamaican
style), the jerk chicken, and pretty much everything on the menu. The
food is simple, unpretentious, and delicious. Their fried plaintains are
authentic and not smothered in brown sugar or anything gross like that.

Also, they *will* deliver to Squirrel Hill, and presumably neighborhoods
closer to uptown, such as Oakland. They are friendly folks; give them
 your business.

They are listed in the phone book as "Jamaica restaurant."

Well, most of the decor is Jamaica travel posters, several of which
feature women in bikinis. I'm not sure if I'd call it sexist. But,
then again, I haven't paid much attention to the decor. The food is
wonderful. A group of us went there for lunch again yesterday; the
jerk chicken was extra spicy (and very good).

For those who don't know the area that well (or even for those who do:
I had never heard that area called uptown until I first saw a post on
Jamaica Jamaica, even though I grew up here): the Jamaica Jamaica is
on 5th, about 4 blocks or so beyond Chatham Center (in the lower
Hill). It's an easy walk from downtown.

More good baseball books appear in a single year than have been
written about football in the past fifty years. The best football
writers, like Dan Jenkins, have the good sense to write about
something else most of the time.
