Shawn, You may want to try Hikaru in Manayunk. Upstairs is a
regular restaurant, and downstairs (actually, the main floor, ground level) is a "Benihana"-style set-up. Check it out!

Hmmm.
Anyone else around here who really enjoys Meij-En? I've been there three times in three separate attempts to check out their sushi, which I'd heard was good. EACH time, the service was *beyond* slow...I clocked it at 45 minutes *just to get water* the third time, and the second time it was a good hour and a half to get our appetizers, although our water came within 20 minutes. I mean, it seemed TOTALLY outrageous, I would not have gone back after the first time (we waited an hour for appetizers and then were told they were OUT of SUSHI! And this was early on a weekday) but people kept telling me it was good. So we went the second time...it was worse. And I still didn't get to try much sushi, because it was taking way too long - after they brought out our sushi appetizers, they said the kitchen was very backed up and it would take at least another hour to get sushi for dinner, so we ordered other stuff. Then, the third time, we ordered water and apps, never got the apps - got the water after begging after 45 minutes...and then we got up and walked out of the place when some Asian people, who were seated shortly after we got our water, were brought appetizers within 15 minutes of their sitting down (we still hadn't gotten ours).

Is it just that they do not like Me/my dining companions? Are they prejudiced against me in particular, or perhaps non-asians in general? Does their service in fact SUCK this much? Or did I catch them on three incredibly bad nights?

We've sat at grill tables every time we've been there, and I wonder - did we go on good nights and you went on bad? My husband & I have been there alone, and with our sons, a few times and the only time I was even close to thinking the service was bad was once when it took too long for the server to come back with the bill after giving him our credit card...

I'm not a sushi fan, but my husband is, and he loved what he had there. My kids love to be at the grill tables, and what they grill up there beats what you can get at the chains (Benihana or Kobe's).

Besides...we mistakenly left our credit card there last week, and called early on July 4 and not only was it there, but the owner let us come & get it long before they opened... and returned my call within minutes with the good news!

*Try Aoi at 12th & Walnut. Amazing sushi. If you really like and can
*afford it they have an all-you-can-eat sushi deal for $24.95. I'm not
*sure how it's limited though (i.e. days of the week, times of the day)

ARGH!
I'm sorry, but of all the sushi places I've tried, AOI is really the worst. I mean, it's a cool AYCE (all you can eat) deal and all, but the sushi quality is just NOT consistent, and sometimes it is very bad. Also, the pieces are small. For sushi within center city, I would go with Genji on Sansom St. I have had good sushi at another place over on Arch near 10th, whose name escapes me but they also serve chinese food. Hands down, however, the absolute yummiest, best sushi in the region is at Sagami, in Collingswood NJ, not too far from the Fantasy Showbar :) They were on vacation for the past several weeks and now they're back and I just can't wait to go again...

You're thinking of SHOGUN! It's pretty good there, I agree. I also agree with you re: Genji and Sagami. You have good taste for food that tastes good, my dear [shades of Charlie the Tuna here?]. Meet me at Sagami in ... five minutes ... ready, set ... and ... GO!!!
