La Foret--rave review

We just came back from dining at La Foret. It was our anniversary and
we took our kids (one 20, one 15; yes, we've been married awhile). My
husband is so happy and gushing--he has gotten to be so critical of
restaurants and this was his best meal in Pittsburgh in more than 10
years (since La Normande)! We were in New York earlier this week and
dined out several times and this meal beat those as well.

The duck breast was extremely good (better than any place except
Robuchon, now defunct, in Paris and maybe Tour D'Argent). The
 appetizers of seared
tuna with wasabe sauce (and some lovely seaweed type accompaniment) and the
crab appetizer (one of our son's had) and the pate de fois gras were all
excellent. One son had venison and liked it, the other had steak and
 said
it was ok (and he is very picky about his steak). My husband loved his
Tarte Tatin (much better than he got in NYC at a more expensive
 restaurant earlier
in the week; ditto for the duck), and I liked my dessert medley. Our son
enjoyed his creme brule ice cream (the other son passed on dessert).

The little amuse of appetizers before the meal, the grapefruit sorbet to
cleanse the pallette, and the cookies apres were all quite nice as well.

The service was excellent and the ambiance very pleasant. We think it
is a much more enjoyable culinary experience than Monterrey Bay
(although the view is perhaps something to take into account if
entertaining first timers to Pittsburgh) or Casbah.

Maybe the service would not be as good on the weekends, but I suspect
they are accommodating and bring in more servers. Anyway, we recommend
 the place.
