The other night two friends and I went to Jaya, which is where the Szechuan Gourmet was, in Shadyside. [Actually, I had a feeling that they just kinda changed the place, but didn't ask.] Their menu says they are a "Malaysian style Chinese Restaurant." There are classic Chinese items on the menu, but lots of 'specialties'. We were on a real noodle bend, I guess. One of my friends got the Singapore noodles. They were very tasty, but she's a spice-wimp, it was almost too hot for her. Ironically it was the least spicy dish on the table. I got the Chow Kueh Teow, which the menu says is "Malaysia's famous noodles". Also very tasty, and just hot enough to be noticable without overpowering. Another friend got the best thing [in my opinion] of the three of us, Curry Mee, which is a curried chicken noodle soup. The soup was -hot- as well as delicious, and seemed to have some coconut milk in it without it overpowering the curry taste. The menu includes about a dozen vegetarian dishes, about half from the 'specialty area' [only one a noodles dish], although we didn't try any of them. Three entrees and three appetizers was about $28 before tip. The service was friendly and very attentive (none of our cups or glasses seemed to ever get less than half full :-) but the place was fairly empty when we were there [about 5pm on a weekend afternoon]. Jaya is on Bellefonte street in Shadyside, between Ellsworth and Walnut. 683-1763. Like the Szechuan Gourmet did, they have a take-away menu and they deliver.
