haven't been there in a while but Harris's on Ellsworth is great! (Greek/mid-eastern cuisine) The best gyro you'll eat! Good cafes in Oakland?

Good gyros (my friend esp. liked the chicken gyros), but be forewarned: Harris Grill has the worst service I've ever encountered. We've given them several chances but it never improved. BTW, for my money the best gyros in town are at the Open Flame in Squirrel Hill. Misho

They also serve vegetarian food. The 61C in Squirrel Hill is a good place to hang, with delicious coffee. Not much in the way of food, however. I can't think of any coffee shops in the Oakland area which meet all three of your criteria ("nice, cozy and inexpensive"), but for food the Spice Island Tea House and Road to Karakash are both good. - Steve

I have to recommend the 61C also, but I like it for it's atmosphere and not it's coffee. The brewed coffee (all flavors) has an awful acrid taste. And as for food they have the same array of rich deserts as any cafe. IMHO, the best coffee in Squirrel Hill is the Coffee Bean Tree Roasters (or some permutation of those words); the atmo is more sterile but the coffee is very good (and roasted there); they also have a wide array of deserts and goodies (usually pretty fresh). In terms of cozy Shadyside cafes, I like the former Arabica, or now Copland Court; while it now faces direct competition with Starbucks across the street, it's got a decent patio space and large well-lit area in back to study in. -Tom
Definitely Spice Island Tea House and the Road to Karakesh...Fab food...reasonable prices...pleasant atmospheres... 'Sip' in Shadyside can get kind of young gay snotty in the evenings...'kinda' hell...it IS young gay snotty in the evenings...but very pleasant during the day... Dancing Goats on Ellsworth is nice if you get a seat outside... If you're looking for mindless young american 'trendy' atmospheres, there are plenty to choose from in Pittsburgh...but for a pleasant, laid back atmosphere...try Chicago... I just went to Cafe at Photo Forum last saturday night. it was fantastic! they have a few gourmet sandwiches under $7, excellent salads (some could be an entree) for under $10, and 2-3 specials in the teens. The atmosphere is charming and the ourdoor patio is beautiful. service was good and we didn't have to wait. They have a liquor license now but NO airconditioning. they also have live music on fri/sat.

I have consistently had such bad experiences there that I will not return. On three different occasions I went there to have dinner. On one of those occasions, the dinner was so poor that I could not eat it. On the other two, the service was so bad that I left before my food came (in each case, after waiting more than an hour for it to arrive after ordering). The only way I've ever successfully gotten a drink there is by getting it at the bar myself; the wait staff simply does not seem to respond to requests for drinks. [email removed]
