I've heard though that Max's Allegheny Tavern also on the North Side has
 better German food.

I think the Carlton (Mellon Bank building) is a great restaurant. Very
good food, good service, and the best approach to wine of any restaurant
in the 'burgh: $10 over state store prices and an excellent list. They
also make a real effort to get you out in time for the show/game.

My only complaint is when they seat me in that row of two-person tables
so that I get to enjoy the conversations next to me. I really hate that.

The Steelhead Grill in the Marriott is very good. Also VERY expensive.
There's not too much else at that end of town, but nothing in downtown is
really out of walking distance. There a great Cambodian Restaurant (somewhat
similar to Thai)on First Avenue near Smithfield Street. Call Pnohm Penh
(sp?). They have a newer place that's a little fancier in decor and with a
broader menu on Sixth between Penn and Fort Duquesne (near Heinz hall). The
Southwest Bistro down there might also be OK but I haven't been there in a
 while.

Others have made other suggestions so I'll leave it at that.

If you like Hot dogs and French fries, check out "Yovi's little bit of Chicago
on Liberty near Sixth Avenue (as opposed to sixth street) for lunch. Chicago
style dogs with all the fixings on a poppy seed roll plus good fries.

They have the best fish I've ever eaten. I would definitely recommend this
 place.
