Or, if quality alone, rather than somewhere to eat, is the criterion, Patisserie Julien in the strip, or Moio's Italian Bakery in Monroeville. Or, if squirel hill is the criterion... well, one could do worse than hot caramel apple pie a la mode eat and park. It's certainly cheaper and better than Gullifty desserts. ------- Michael Witbrock. Dessert Anyone?
In article , "Mary R. Jensen" Someone wrote: RE:Dessert anyone? I will share my secrets with all of you dessert lovers out there. Since I am a native Pittsburgher, I know all of the haunts for good baked goods. Don't serve me dessert in a fancy restaurant after a gourmet meal. Let me buy it in a store and make a ritual out of consuming it, complete with delicious freshly ground Coffee, made in a chemex. U>S>A Gourmet bakery has the most delicious cinnamon rolls. they also come in an orange flavor , too. These are round pastries with a buttery croissant type of dough. They are slathered with a thick icing-vanilla for the cinnamon rolls and orange for the orange rolls. Juliens has wonderful French pastries but they are a little expensive. Now Kaufmann's department store downtown has great baked goods. My favorite is the cannoli. I have not had better ones than these, even in Little Italy. Knells in Mount Washington make a scrumptious Lady Lock;. the cream filling is out of this world. The Manor bakery in Greentree/Mount Lebanon has a mocha bar cake which is only $5.99 and would be good to serve at a dinner. I forgot to mention the chocolate truffles that U.S.A. Gourmet makes. These are tasty and reasonably priced considering that they are hand made. The best truffles that I have ever truly had are sold by Betsy Ann candy in the North Hills. This is chocolate candy to die for. But candies are another subject. I could go on about sweets forever. Is there anyone out there who likes sweets as much as I do? Louise Gray
Try Cafe Azure on North Craig street. Everything is very rich, but is wonderful. Also, try the expresso cake at Papa J's cafe in Oakland or Mt Lebanon. It is chocolate to die for.
