I haven't been to Dean's Diner for a few years, but they were quite well known for their pies. They even sell them at a stand during the town's summer festival (Diamond Days). The menu has most of what you would expect in a traditional roadside diner.

Dean's is a landmark, as is their sign, which they always seem to keep updated with highway safety warnings, patriotic messages, holiday greetings, etc. At one time they were about the only place to stop along that portion of Rt. 22, but today they have to compete with McD's, etc.

On a recent drive to NYC I decided to forego
my usual route and drive east on 22 to Altoona
and then north to 80 on 220. The purpose was
to finally try Dean's Diner. I was there about
6:30am for breakfast. It was pretty pathetic.
I love diners but not all diners make good
food. I thought Dean's was mediocre at best.
I had eggs over med. (these were okay) and
bacon soft (again, okay) and home fries (these
really sucked - not browned at all, not seasoned
with anything much, not even much salt, and
very greasy and I don't' normally quibble about
grease but this was excessive). I'm not about
to go back there again. I suppose they might
do other things better but I'm skeptical on
that score so I'm not going to take a chance.
Oh, and service was very poor considering that
the waitresses out numbered that patrons at that
hour.
