Clem's is great!

Went to Clem's BBQ on 22 out near Blairsville this weekend. I loved
it. I had the ribs and they were falling off the bone tender and moist.
The sauce was good - sweet and tangy - although my personal
preference would be for slightly less tanginess, I still enjoyed it
tremendously. My aunt had the pulled pork BBQ sandwich and
it was excellent. Lots of meat on a really delicious roll. These rolls
are also given out with the ribs and chicken. They are freshly
baked and have an excellent crispy crust and soft chewy interior.
Just the kind of bread I go for. I also had the cole slaw, which I
really liked, and the potato salad which was good but not the
style I prefer - perhaps a little too much mustard and/or pickle juice.
(Well, actually, *any* mustard or pickle juice is too much for me. ;-))

I can't imagine why my friend Bill Pollack thought the food was "too
greasy". I didn't find it to be at all greasy and neither did my aunt -
and she's always complaining about stuff being greasy.

I'd like to compare it with some other recent BBQ I had. That was from
Backyard BBQ on Centre Ave. The ribs themselves were good, but
their sauce had no flavor at all. (I'm talking about the mild sauce. I
didn't taste the hot version.) Then there's the Texas BBQ place up by
Slippery Rock. Their sauce is great but a different style - more smoky,
less tangy - but very good flavor. One of my very favorite places used to
be Red River BBQ when they had their little stores all around town and
served cafeteria-style. They make a great sauce and the meats were
always very well-prepared. My favorite was the BBQ pork sandwich.
Too bad they are gone. (No, I don't count that abomination out in
 Wexford!)

Anyway, Clem's is definitely worth the drive. (We took the scenic
route home and took 981 to Saltsburg and then 380 back to my aunt's
house in Plum.) A lovely summer day's outing.

Uh, my judgment was based on the large clumps of fat in which the meat
and bones were so generously encased. I thought that maybe they were
just having a bad day until I stopped a few months later and ordered
chicken (I thought that might be a safer choice) and threw most of it
away in disgust--it was dry and barely edible. After that, I vowed
 "never again!"

But okay, Kate, you know how I value your expert opinion--I guess I will
try it one more time next time I pass by.

 Kate,

I agree with your assessment. I to was surprised by the negative response.
The sauce and bread were great. SASE is a tough thing to please every one
on. What's hot to one is mild to another. Best thing to do is make it mild
and let each one add some hot stuff to suit the taste. I asked for extra
sauce to dip the meat in. It was great and I will go back.

I am going to try Jerome's in Monongahella next. It's the original "rib
joint" from back in the late 40s and early 50's. Just heard it's still there
only the dirt floor has been replaced.

 Kate,

Monongahella is up the Mon River from McKeesport, Clairton, and Elizabeth.
Just follow Rt. 837 south. It goes right to Monongahella (Mon City to the
locals). Jerome's is across the river from Mon City. There is a bridge at
the south end of town. It's best to ask for directions from there (unless
your are a man, which case you never ask for directions). It's not too far
 from the bridge.
