Those of you who are interested in great food in Pgh area ought to know
about a fairly new restaurant in Hopwood, near Uniontown. Chez Gerard
opened about 8 months ago in a refurbished 200 year old house. It is a
fabulous country French restaurant with absolutely great food. They
feature a fixed price 6 course dinner for, get this, 35 bucks, and the
selections are superb. They have a great wine list, including French,
California and some fabulous Washington wines. The people who run it are
knowledgable, courteous and attentive, and the staff is all French. The
setting is elegant, and they have all kinds of special food events,
including a regular Sunday brunch, monthly wine tastings and a great
variety of special offerings. This is a truly marvelous place, not quite
as elegant as the sorely missed LeForet, but much less expensive and very
charming. This place is a real find. You'll love it.

Yes, the sixth course is a cheese course, consisting of your choice from
about 6 or 7 different cheeses. This is really a fine restaurant that is
very reasonably priced, at a fixed price of $35.00. It's a bargain, even
for "student types," who might easily spend that much at any of the mid-
priced Pgh restaurants. Go, eat, enjoy.

We went there for dinnerin February, and had the same impression. Nice
and pleasant place, excellent food - probably the best dinner (both in
food, and overall experience) I've had in Pittsburgh.

That evening, the kitchen was very, very slow, and the waitress came to
apologize frequently - but we were actually more than happy about that
and enjoyed it a lot to have plenty of time to talk and enjo ourselves.

Minor observations: If you have the 7-course meal, don't expect 7
different entrees - this includes an amuse goeulle (sp?), the salad and
cookies/fruit after desert, we left with that satisfied feeling after an
excellent meal, without being unpleasantly stuffed. They also charge
extra for certain selections, so you may end up paying more than the
initial price (well worth it, though).

We stayed at the B&B - a pretty hotel, with nice and friendly service,
but relatively far from the restaurant, and on a not particularly pretty
street. It's fine, but does not measure up to the restaurant IMHO -
also, when we were there, the bakery was closed, which probably would
 have made a difference.
