Calabash

 Hi!
My wife and I have had a few really good meals at Calabash, a new
Jamaican place in Wilkinsburg. The food is very reasonably priced, and
the portions are very large. All dinners are served with an excellent
version of 'rice and peas', in which the rice is subtly flavored with
coconut, a couple of fried plantain quarters, and a very refreshing,
sweet, but not creamy cole slaw. The main courses have all been very
good. I've tried the oxtail stew and brown stew chicken. These dishes
are somewhat similar; stews cooked in a spicy ( though not 'curry like')
gravy. My wife tried the chicken curry, which was very flavorful, and
enriched with coconut. The meat and chicken pies are also very good.
I haven't tried the jerk chicken yet, as they never seem to have it
when I'm there. This can be the case with any given dish on any given
day. In my experience this is typical of Caribbean restaurants. The menu
is more of a list of dishes that may be available, so don't go with your
heart set on any particular dish. It might also be a good idea to ask
the waitress if they have anything special available that day.

Woops. Its on Penn Ave in Wilkinsburg. I can't find the street adress,
but its about 3 blocks from Salvatore's, which is at 612 Penn Ave. Note
that the street numbering starts over once you enter Wilkinsburg.
