Hi John...
Lived there for many years... here are my recommendations:

Favorite Italian:

Genoa Restaurant
503-238-1464
2832 SE Belmont
Portland, OR
Mon-Sat 5:30-9:30
Note: Reservations can be booked out weeks in advance, I'd suggest calling ASAP.

2nd Favorite Italian:

Il Piatto Restaurant
503-236-4997
2348 SE Ankeny
Portland, OR

Favorite Thai:

Lemongrass Thai Restaurant
503-231-5780
1705 NE Couch
Portland, OR

Fun atmosphere with excellent Moroccan food (I know, you didn't specify this genre, but it's something you can't get in Seattle):

Marrakesh Restaurant
503-248-9442
1201 NW 21st
Portland, OR
Daily 5:00-10:00

Hope you have fun!

I'd recommend Saigon Kitchen -- not a fancy place at all, but the food is great!

There's also one in Portland, at NW 21st and Lovejoy. It's right on the new streetcar line.

Nobody's mentioned Swagat, have they? Best Indian food north of the Bay area, but it is out in Beaverton, rather than Portland proper. Sorry I don't have the address handy, but all my local Indian friends swear by this place (I understand there's a branch in Vancouver BC, as well, but we forgot about it when we were up there a couple weeks ago. Darn.).

Very very yummy the one time I went.

I was in Portland this week and went to a wonderful place called "Cafe Dacx" http://portland.citysearch.com/profile/11582809/

its actually right on NW Vaughn St.

The food was wonderful ! I had both of their specials (soup and stergeon(sp) ) and I loved both . They also had some very good derserts. it is in a funky old building right across the street from the new Holiday Inn Express (which now has highspeed BTW) on NW Vaughn St. It is small and intimate. I can't wait to go back ...
