Portland (OR) & small-town WA restaurant suggestions?

Portland has a number of good restuarants. One of my favorites that won't kill the pocketbook is the Compass Cafe on SE Hawthorne Blvd.

Another restuarant a a little more expensive is Cafe Des Amis in NW Portland on Kearny St. It is (in my humble opinion) the best and most romantic small restaurant.

If you like mexican food there is always Who-Song and Larry's Cantina on the columbian river in Vancouver. ( This is a commercial because I work there)

In the Hood River area there is a restaurant attacted the the Hood River Hotel downtown (not the one on the river) It is italian, good and reasonable.

On the Oregon coast near Lincoln City there are two good restaurants, The Bay House and Chez Jeanette. I think Chez Jeanette is better.

Then there is always Mo's for clam chowder, it is a coastal institution.

In Wine Country , on the way to the beach, there is Nick' s in McMinnville and the Red Hills Rest in Dundee. Haven't eaten at Red Hills, but enjoyed Nicks.

If you are driving up the I-5 corridor and need a stop around the Chehalis area, try and find Mary McCranks. It serves all homemade farm style food at more than reasonable prices.

Those are just a few hints. Portland is becoming quite a restaurant town and has lots of good eats.

Sounds like Gwen has a serious road trip ahead of her. I have spent the past couple of years getting acclimated to Portland by trying as many restaurants as I can. Here are some of my picks:

Shakers Cafe in the Pearl District (NW Portland) has countless salt and pepper shakers on display inside. It's a great place to grab an informal breakfast.

Brasserie Montmartre is downtown near Nordstrom and has live jazz at night as well as an affordable midday special menu from 2-5pm on weekdays. There is plenty of atmosphere whenever you go.

Southpark (named after Portland's South Park Blocks - NOT the cartoon) is downtown at Park and Salmon where the old B. Moloch Heathman Brewpub used to be. It's ritzy and brand spanking new, so the staff is eager to please. The food is as inventive as their decor, and the old pub in back is now a trendy wine bar. If your parents can tolerate it, you should go.

I keep returning to NE 39th and Sandy to have Vietnamese food at My Canh. They have a huge menu and are quite affordable.

There are quite a few restaurants up and down Trendy Third (NW 23rd), which is Portland's answer to Seattle's Capitol Hill area. I can't say enough good things about the drunken noodles at Typhoon. On the northern edge of NW 23rd is Besaw's, another great place for breakfast or brunch.

I had a great steak at Ringside on west Burnside, but I also hear that Henry Ford's is nice, too. I haven't eaten at Caprial's in Westmoreland yet, but I hope to very soon. When my brother flew up to visit me on his birthday, I took him out for a seven course meal at Genoa, and we agree that they made us one of the best dinners of our lives.

Have fun,

Fred
