For an interesting experience in urban reclamation projects, try McMenamin's Lincoln School. They have a web site that can decribe things in better detail. My friends took me there for a Sunday breakfast not long after it opened last year. The food was fine, service was...not. But it had just opened. If you are "bad" you can go to the detention room and drink single malt scotch and smoke a cigar.

Actually, it's the Kennedy School. McMenamin's (an Oregon and Washington brewpub chain) has another large complex east of Portland called Edgefield. Both are interesting, especially if you're into craft beer, but they wouldn't be the first places I'd think of for breakfast.

Heathman Hotel - They have a bakery that does great breakfasts one block behind or they do breakfast in the more formal dining room, at least on the weekend.

My favorite breakfast in Portland is at the Bread and Ink Cafe, 3610 SE Hawthorne.

Thanks. Returned home last night. :-)
One breakfast at The Hawthorne Café, one at the Bijou Café. Both were good. And the brie from The Blue Heron French Cheese Factory (or something like that) is really good.

Nor would I think of them for anything but a leisurely afternoon now that I've been there. I don't recommend them for dinner, the accomodations were ok, but the service was horrible.

Kruger's Truck Stop out in Troutdale off I84. Every item offers add-ins so you can make a huge custom breakfast if you like
