Depending on your interests:

Montgomery Inn -- great ribs, very popular and crowded
2 locations, one by the river, one in Montgomery (N of downtown)
Maisonette -- perennial 5-star rated, expensive continental
La Normandie -- downstairs from the Maisonette, same ownership,
same kitchen (?), more casual, less expensive, very good
Orchids -- in Omni Netherland Hilton, just go in to see dining room
Precinct -- 3-4 mi. E of downtown, _great_ steaks ($13 and up),
casual, many sports figures hang out here
      Pomi's -- near U.C. (2-3 mi N of downtown), wonderful wood-fired pizza
Inn the Wood -- near U.C., good breakfasts

and don't forget the obligatory visit to a chili parlor!

Can recommend Maisonette, excellent French food but pricey, and Elm Restaurant (on Elm Street), very interesting menu, good food, mid-price range. We were there in March so recommendations up to date.
