I thought I would de-lurk and let everyone know about what I consider to be the finest Indian buffet and cuisine (IMHO!) in the triangle, Tandoor Indian Restaurant, located at Greenwood Commons Shopping Center on Hwy 55, Research Triangle Park (same center with Stay Online and the Health Spa).

The quality of the food and waitstaff has been consistent since my first visit, which was their opening day. Absolutely no complaints with either. The food is delicious - I prefer it 'not-so-spicy' so that you can actually taste the flavor of the ingredients and herbs. If you choose to order from the menu, you're going to be treated to quite a large selection to choose from. They will even go so far to make something special for you (say, to add or subtract spiciness) even if you are having the buffet, whatever it takes to make you happy.

Being a repeat customer of theirs (at least once a week), my girlfriend and I have become on friendly terms with the owner, and can always expect a warm greeting and close attention when dining there. Evidentially they reward the frequent patronage, a quality I like seeing in a restaurant.

If you're going for their buffet, I would suggest that you arrive before 12 or after 1 pm. 1 PM seems to be the magic time for when most customers are leaving, freeing up some space and toning down ambient background conver- sation (which there isn't much to begin with - a very nice place for a quiet lunch or good atmosphere).

Their dinner buffet is the same as their lunch, so don't expect any different dishes. Request a menu instead, unless the buffet is what you're wanting (but do expect to pay about $3 more if that is what you want).

They also have another restaurant in Chapel Hill, at 1301 E. Franklin Street. I've never been to this location, so I couldn't offer any observations.

In case anyone is interested, they have their own website at http://www.tandoorindian.com ... a sample menu is posted there.

I read this newsgroup on a somewhat regular basis, but can't remember seeing any mention of this place, so I thought I would let everyone know of the
*continually* good experience I've been having with the place. I think it's a great restaurant, and I hope you guys will find it satisfying, too.

I've eaten there only once (lunch buffet during the work week) and thought it was at best OK throughout, nothing especially outstanding, good or bad.

Personally, I think India Palace II on Airport Blvd in Morrisville has much better food. The service is usually good, although on one occasion, a weekend buffet lunch, service was non-existent, even for the minimal amount of service required for a buffet (basically to refill our water glasses, and clearing plates every ten minutes or so). We were one of only two occupied tables.
