Good Outer Banks BBQ?

I'm sorry to report that there are no really great worldclass NC BBQ joints in the OBX. And as a part-time North Carolinian it pains me deeply to say that.

The Duck Deli in Duck, NC has "fair to middlin'" BBQ sandwiches but it ain't spectacular by any means. You're right, Pigman's is downright disapointing - but not nearly as bad as Bubba's BBQ in Frisco which outright sucks. There is a somewhat new joint up in the Corolla area called "NC BBQ" that can be good but is a bit hit & miss. Jockey's Ribs in Nagshead is both disappointing AND over-priced. For good barbecue around OBX, the best I've found are some of the half dozen roadside joints on the road to Kittyhawk on the mainland around the Grundy to Coinjock area near the home of the giant Gravedigger 4x4 monster truck. They're far better than any I've had in the OBX area but still a far cry from the ranks of Wilbur's, Pete Jones or King's.

What I can tell you that is not just good but GREAT in OBX is a little hidden local's jewel called the Kittyhawk Pier Diner at the Kittyhawk Pier near MM 1 on the Beach Rd. Great breakfast and lunch and the best view in OBX. Also, right across the street is the Rundown Cafe, a great lunch & dinner cafe with a wonderful redneck / caribbean fusion menu. Dirty Dick's Crabhouse is a favorite for Seafood to Go and can stock a cooler great. Also Seamark Foods Grocery has great fresh spiced shrimp by the lb. that they'll steam for you free to go while you wait - also a great way to stock a cooler for the beach or the hotel room. Lastly, for live music and some wild party vibes - The Gaslight and the Port O' Call both are usually rockin' with good bands.

Hope you have a good time!
