The restaurant connected with the Sanderling Inn is very good (Sanderling is right next to Duck) - but no TV there for hockey watching! scg

We stayed at the Sanderling 2 years ago, primarily _because_ of the supposedly great restaurant. We found it to be OK, but nothing special. We had better meals elsewhere on the Outer Banks, but nothing stands out enough for me to remember at this time. Francine

Hi -

We've been to the Outer Banks many times and have also stayed at the Sanderling, most recently June 1995. The food was very good (surprisingly), but before that it was supposedly lousy, and before *that* it was also good. The chef & mgmt. keep changing (they totally screwed up our reservations 2 years ago and we only went back because they gave us a free night). We do have 2 favorite restaurants that are two of the best places I've eaten *anywhere*. The first is Elizabeth's, right in the center of Duck, I believe at the Scarborough Faire shops. The food is out of this world, but the restaurant is VERY small, so you need reservations. The other place we love is the Collington Cafe. It's not a cafe; it's in a house, so it's like eating in someone's home. The food, again, is excellent. We've been there twice and Elizabeth's once and I can't wait to go in July so we can go back to Elizabeth's. There's also one other place that we've never tried but it was highly recommended (by the woman who used to own the B&B that we always stayed at). It's called Simply Ron's and it's in a shopping center. Being the food snob that I am, I hated eating in a shopping center, but it's supposed to be wonderful (it's actually in Nags Head). Anyway, stick w/Elizabeth's or Collington Cafe and you CAN't go wrong. And there's one other place, further on up in Nags Head at Mile Marker 11. It's called Tortuga's Lie. It's a very small bar/restaurant that serves sort of Caribbean-style food. It's a favorite of ours for lunch. Another spot that "regulars" to the Outer Banks go to, so it can get VERY crowded (altho in the Spring it'll be great). And I believe they have TVs so you watch the playoffs. Have a ball - I can't wait to get there this summer!

Hi.

Thanks to all of you for your recommendations for
places to eat in Duck, NC. We just got back from
our trip - here's our culinary summary:

- spent 4 days at my parents' place in Pine Knoll
Shores (near Atlantic Beach and Morehead City).
Had a great meal at Bistro on the Beach in Atlantic Beach. Great fresh seafood, Had a tuna steak grilled and topped with shrimp, dried cherries, and marinated portabello mushrooms. The Bourbon St. Cafe in Atlantic Beach also deserves a mention - good cajun food, but nothing too innovative.

- in Okracoke, we had a great meal at the Back Porch. I had a shrimp tostada with mango salsa that was super. My husband's scallops in cilantro lime butter were great as well.

- We tried Elizabeth's (thanks for the recommendations) and were ambivalent about it. Our food was very good, but we just weren't crazy about the place.

Much more to our liking was the Roadside Bar & Grill in Duck. It's a tiny place. We sat at the bar which is adjacent to the kitchen. The chef stopped by and explained what changes there were to the menu. There were lots of locals there. Very casual, but really top-notch food. We split a pan-seared scallop salad over a black bean, corn, tomato vinagrette to start. It was probably the best dish we had the whole week. I had pork tenderloins with a fresh peach, apple, walnut chutney. My husband had filet with a chopped oyster/portabello mushroom topping.

Sorry you didn't like Elizabeth's as much as we did. When we were there, there was a rehearsal dinner going on, and it was as much fun eating as it was watching all the people and the nervous bride and groom! I will try the Roadside Bar & Grill in Duck when we go. It sounds really good. I'm always open for a new good place to eat. Thanks for the info!

Tracy: I replied earlier recommending the Sanderling Inn, where we did have good food last year. I never mentioned Elizabeth's, where we also ate, because we did not care for it. It was a little too cutsey and the food just wasn't that great - everybody in our group was in agreement. Someone posted how much they liked it so I didn't want to comment. Interesting that you weren't crazy for it either. Glad your trip went well. scg
