Cape Hatteras is at the tip of the outer banks accessible only from Manteo/Nags Head or by Ferry. It is a two hour ferry ride, or a 1 hour drive from Nags Head (I think). How near do mean by "near"? Also realize that Q is the real thing here in NC and you will probably have a hard time if you are looking for that "other stuff" people on this ng call Q. If you are going to the Outer Banks from the west on Hwy. 70, Kings in Kinston is good, and Wilber's in Goldsboro is better. Parkers and Bill's in Wilson are excellent, although I think Bill's is out of commission from the flooding due to Floyd. I don't know of any closer though (and gee, that is what you were asking! Pardon me...) jf Jack S. wrote: > I'm looking and would appreciate any advice from you in the know. > > Thanks, > > Jack > > -- > "If we haven't met, you really don't know Jack Schidt" > >

Best Q joint near cape hatteras?
Bubba's in Avon (north of Hatteras) or Frisco (south of Hatteras).

I find it too greasy and not much smoke flavor. But it seems Bubba has good days & bad days. Also, I don't like the way he hacks his meat into big chunks. Pigman's up near Kittyhawk is not too bad, but he's pretty commercial and just not the real NC cue deal in my taste. Pretty weak sauce too, no twang. Jockey's Ribs in Nagshead is also not bad for a nice sitdown place. But I haven't been there for awhile and have heard varying quality reports. There are 2 other small BBQ joints on the mainland road to Nagshead from VA Beach just after you cross over into NC that are pretty good, Dixie BBQ and can't remember the others name, that I like better than Bubba's or Pigman's. Both are in kinda rundown lookin' places, always a good sign. One other OBX note, The Rundown Cafe at MM 1 in Kittyhawk doesn't have BBQ but they make some tasty conch fritters and caribbean style food. But Wilbur's is the real wood smoked thing. Down in Carolina they say real BBQ is judged on how many miles you'll drive for it. IMHO Wilbur's is good 50+ mile BBQ! cap'n ron ...always on the BBQ trail
One more word about Bubba's in Frisco. I have on occasion had some very good barbecue there. Yeah, a few times it has sucked, but mostly it's been pretty good. Besides, when you're at Cape Hatteras it's pretty much the only game in town. And something about the roar of the ocean, the salt air, and the CH lighthouse looking down on ya just seems to add something special to the place. So by all means, if you find yourself in Frisco, stop on by Bubba's BBQ. Barbecue I reckon is somewhat like religion in that we all have our own particular denominations and favorite pastors. Down in NC, BBQ is DEFINITELY a religion, so I don't want to gio throwing stones at anybody else's church. Besides, like my grandpa Chalie used to always say: "An opinion is like a rearend, everybody has one and most of them stink." May the good barbecue be yours, cap'n ron ...who himself worships at the church of Buz&Ned's Real Pit BBQ, Rt 1 at Greentop's Sporting Goods, Richmond, VA Mmmm-mm!!!!! :-)
