These are from the Charlotte Observer best of 2003. Has anyone tried either?

BARBECUE (EASTERN)- BILL SPOON'S

Eastern North Carolina style. The meat's flavor is nutty and rich. The sauce doesn't get in the way. BONUS: Incredible banana pudding.

SOUTH CHARLOTTE
5524 South Boulevard; (704) 525-8865.

BARBECUE (WESTERN)- BRIDGE'S BARBECUE LODGE

Western North Carolina style. Pit-cooked with hickory wood for eight hours. BONUS: Hush puppies.

SHELBY
U.S. 74 Bypass across from the Cleveland Mall; (704) 482-8567.

If you're in Charlotte but willing to travel head for Lexington for Lexington #1, not Shelby. Spoon's is ok but I wouldn't make a special trip for it and I went to high school with Bill Jr. I lived within a mile of the place for thirty years and ate there maybe five times.

If you do go to Shelby go to Alston Bridge's place, its a little better than the one on Hwy 74.

Anyone remember Old Original on Camp Green St? Guy named Duck ran the place, they closed four or five years ago and good Q in Charlotte went with him. Hickory House is good but not great. Their Q is good, their slaw is just OK, and their hush puppies...well I don't even remember them. Just don't go to the place Hickory something or other on Montford Dr. in south Charlotte near Park Road Shopping center, terrible. Go to the Roasting Company next door...that is good.
