There are some good places and some very bad. Starting at Ronoake Rapids/Weldon - Ralphs...bad, bad, bad Rocky Mount - Melton's...This was the old cornerstone of NC barbecue for years. They have recently remodeled the place and the cue is really bad now, but the hush puppies are great (easy to get to..US64 by pass to East off I95 to 301 business south for one block, turn right onto Melton Street for one block then right on Ridge and you are there) Wilson - Parker's...now cooking with gas but it is still OK, not great. On 301 bypass south Bill's...don't even think about it Goldsboro - about 20 miles off I95 on US 70 is Wilber's...this is what its all about. This is the real wood cooked stuff. Stay on US 70 bypass around Goldsboro to east side of town...Wilber's is on the right in the landing pattern for Seymour Johnson AFB. Just a couple of hundred yards away on the other side of the road is McCalls which has really good gas cooked cue Raleigh - Murry's just off I440 bypass one exit north of I40. Exit east and then first right and you are there.

We disagree here. Parker's is still great, gas or not. I am unconvinced by the automatic superiority some ascribe to wood. But YMMV. And, no one can argue with the greatness that is Parker's fried chicken. > On 301 bypass south > Bill's...don't even think about it All I'd add is that Bill's is right near Parker's and Parker's is better so go to Parker's. One place i recommend that is still my little secret is Moore's in Kenly, which is at the next exit south of Wilson. Moore's is no more than 0.2 miles off 95 on 301 in "downtown" Kenly. Great if you're really pressed for time. Friendly folks too. Also just south of Wilson is Smithfield, which has a few well known cue joints. I've tried the White Swan, which is a very old establishment. It's pretty good. > Goldsboro - about 20 miles off I95 on US 70 is Wilber's...this is what its > all about. Supposedly the banana puddin' is great. > McCalls which has really good gas cooked cue Haven't tried McCalls yet. > Raleigh - Murry's just off I440 bypass one exit north of I40. If youre still hungry after getting through NC, try McCabe's in Manning SC (exit 119, about 70 miles south of the NC border) Very good cue and a nice place to try authentic SC barbecue hash. Have fun! Bob Wells
