Where in Westchester? My experience with these places is typically only at lunch, but Bengal Tiger in White Plains does a really nice buffet lunch, and Dawat a few blocks away was very good when we had dinner there. We had a luncheon at the place in Elmsford.. white building, name escapes me at the moment, enjoyed it, too. Then there is Jaipore, in Brewster, so technically it's Putnam, not Westchester, and that was a very nice buffet, unfortunately they have raised their prices since they first opened, it was originally $7 for lunch now it's $9, maybe higher.
There's also The Taj in Mount Kisco. Their lunch isn't as fancy but it's only $6, or at least was the last time we were there. Not much of a selection, but you can eat yourself silly, nevertheless.
Why don't you tell us which places you think are good?

Bengal Tiger in White Plains has a "sister" restaurant in Montrose called India House. The menu is the same in both places, but there are slight differences in the food (then again, that can happen depending on who is doing the mixing of the spices. The "white building" in Elmsford is Malabar Hill. In my opinion, they are the best in Westchester (of those I've tried). Jaipore in Brewster is owned and operated by the same folks as Malabar Hill. >There's also The Taj in Mount Kisco. I've never been there, but I'll have to try it. One more I know of (but have never tried) is Abhilash (sp?) in New Rochelle (or thereabouts), which is reputed to be pretty good. -JPC

I've been to India House, and it's ok but I'm not sure it's as good as the others. The last time we were there they had apparently just gotten some new chef. I don't think it was as good as it had been in the past. I've never been there for their lunch buffet, however. >The "white building" in Elmsford is Malabar Hill. I don't think I realized that the two were owned by the same folks. We did the buffet at MH once and it was excellent, probably on a par with Jaipore. > One more I know of >(but have never tried) is Abhilash (sp?) in New Rochelle (or >thereabouts), which is reputed to be pretty good. Right, I don't usually get down that far but now that there's a Price Club in New Rochelle that I've been to a few times it gives me an excuse. -- Bill [email removed]

I haven't been to Bengal Tiger in years, but I remember that they had a good lunch buffet, then Malabar Hill opened, so we stopped going to Bengal Tiger. We went once to India House, and I thought it was very good. The chef was supposedly Ghandi's old chef. They do not have a lunch buffet, rather you order from a menu. The food was well prepared, and quite copious. Someone mentioned Dawat in White Plains: I have not been to that one, but I have been to the one in Manhattan which was excellent. They are owned by the same people, but I think the White Plains one is much cheaper (the one in N.Y.C. is VERY expensive, but they have a good lunch deal). >The "white building" in Elmsford is Malabar Hill. I have only been there for their buffet lunch, but other people I know have had dinner there and also thought it was good. >>There's also The Taj in Mount Kisco. It was cheap, that's about all I can say in its favor. The buffet had very few choices, and food was not that great. For a couple dollars more you can go to Malabar Hill. /C [email removed]
I have eaten at Dawat for both lunch (many times) and dinner. The buffet luncheon is great. It is $9, but as a "child", I'm 14, but I look younger, I pay $5 and that is a great deal. I have been to Bengal Tiger as well, but that was a while ago, and I don't remember much. The place in Elmsford that you mentioned was probably Malabar Hill; I had dinner there once and found it pretty good as well. I have been to Abhilash in New Rochelle, and it is OK. Dinner is somewhat expensive, but their lunch buffet is reasonable. They do feature Indian music (some guy with a sitar) occasionally, though. Sasha
Dawat is probably the class act in Indian food in white plains. Jeff
