I'll be in Rochester, N.Y. for a couple of days next week. I'd appreciate any recommendations for good dining. Off the top of my head and for general dining I would reccommend "the Water Street Grill", "Charlie Brown's", "Grinnell's", and "The Humphrey House". To the east of town "Butch 25's Depot". If you are on an expense account "The Rio" or "the Brasserie". If you can be more specific as to what you are looking for let me know and I can be of more help. Bon appitite! James C. If you are on an >expense account "The Rio" or "the Brasserie". I am native to Rochester, but haven't lived there for nearly 20 years, so things have obviously changed a lot. I do get back often, as I have a lot of family there. I did eat at Humphrey House (It's in Penfield) but do not recall it much, which is highly unusual for me. Since I would recall a negative experience, I suspect it is good. If the Depot mentioned above is the one in Pittsford, I do know about that one. It has changed hands a couple of times but the origional owner is a good friend of mine and I worked for him when I got out of school for a few years. The concept has changed from the origional steak house theme, but it is pretty good. It retains the railroad atmosphere and is quite interesting from that standpoint. If interested in Italian, try the North Side Inn in East Rochester. It's not pretentious in any way but the food is good. It leans toward Northern but not exclusively. It is a family run business that has been around as long as I have been. (nearing 50 years) The owner, No Nox (don't ask me where this comes from) is still around; his wife seats guests; his son runs the kitchen and his grandson runs the bar. We have many excellent resturants in the city. If your taste runs to Thia, try the King and I on East Henrietta Rd or the Bankok in the downtown. A lot depends on how much you want to spend and if you'll have a car. Some recommendations are the Dasiy Flour Mill ( a restored old flour mill as the name implies), Mario's Via Abruzzi on Monroe, just to name a few.
