Those of you who live in or near Las Cruces, New Mexico need to check out the following restaurants if you haven't already.
Mexican:
Mexican food is the forte of Las Cruces chefs and following is simply
a best of those. You better believe that the chile will be HOT unless I state otherwise.
Nellies: This little hole in the wall has two locations, one on N.
Main and the other (original) on Hadley across from the Aggie Drive In. This is the best Mexican food in Las Cruces, hotter than hell, cheap, and plentiful. It is not a well kept secret so go early, expecting the surface to be slow.
My Brother's Place: Avoid the red chile here. Stick with the green.
It might be the best green chile in town if you can stand the intermitently bad service. Lots of onions in the highly recommended green enchilada.
Chope's: A Mesilla Valley institution located down the old highway in
La Mesa, this place has the best Rellanos around and really terrible service. But that's part of the Chope's experience. Food is great, cheap, and the portions are too large.
The Hacienda: One of the two "yuppie" Mexican places on my list, this
place has great guacamole, amazing chile con queso, and good service. It even has a pleasant atmosphere to boot. Pricier than most in Cruces (which isn't say much by other states criterion).
Santa Fe: Located in a converted Kinko's copies on Solano Dr, this
delightful little gem tries for creative cuisine and is preferable for you wimps out there who can't stand the hot stuff. Try the Chihuahua Style Chicken. It's out of this world. And don't forget an order of Tabasco Onions as well.
Non Mexican:
Tatsu: Expensive but well worth it at any price, this Japanese
restaurant has won its owner countless awards for service, food, and and general ambiance. I have eaten sushi from coast to coast and this place ranks up with the best that San Francisco has to offer.
Kalandra's: The newest sensation of Las Cruces is still something of
a secret and its too bad. Kass makes the most creative food in the Valley. Check this place out! It's on Espina next to La Fuente and across from the Fina gas station. Inexpensive and the only place in town which changes its menu every week!
I welcome comments about these places. But I doubt you will be sorry.
