Hello all,
Just returned from 2 weeks in beautiful Englewood NJ! I
worked long and hard so there were only a few area eating establishments that I visited but here is a report on those.
Bennigans in Englewood NJ on S Van Brunt St.
Above average Bennigans. The food was good and the service
was fair. I had several good waiters/waitresses and a couple of bad ones.
The large screen TV brought in a rowdy crowd for the
basketball/baseball games every time I was there. It's convenience to the hotel made it a frequent stop.
Very predictable and a good place to unwind if you don't mind
the noise.
Carlyle's at the Radisson Hotel in Englewood NJ on S Van Brunt St
Decent food, over priced and service so slow it bordered on
painful.
With a few exceptions the food was very good. The chef
prepared everything to order (that was the explanation given for the long waits. Personally I think they grew the veggies and raised the meat to order :-) and it was well presented. The exceptions were the pasta (typical overcooked restaurant pasta) and the buffalo wings I ordered on my last night there. They were still raw in the middle! Needless to say they went back poste-haste and it ruined my appetite for anything else even though it was offered at no cost.
If it wasn't for the convenience I would have only eaten here
once instead of 3x but after a late night at work it beat traveling or dealing with the crowds at Bennigans.
The Royal Cliffs Palisades Ave. Englewood Cliffs
From the outside this looked like a good place to eat. Well
kept building and lot etc... The decor left a little to be desired though. The interior had wood paneling and lots of windows and mirrors which gave the place a roomy feel but the furniture was straight out of Mel's diner! Pink and gray vinyl booths! Very strange.
The food was a couple of steps above good diner food kind of
medium grade restaurant food. The prices were more restaurant than diner and overall it was OK. The wait staff was attentive although it was very slow when I was there, 5:30pm.

Chris, before you head for Englewood next time be sure to ask for suggestions from the locals! One good place would be on Palisade Ave (the main drag) called It's Greek to Me, a small, unpretentious place with very good food and service. SRO at dinner time! Lotsa other good places in town, and many more in neighbouring Teaneck, Tenafly, and Fort Lee. Don't be a stranger, and don't be shy about asking for recommendations! :)
