Da beach bum Per Michael Stern (12/96): The Green Shack 2504 E. Freemont (1 block west of the Showboat) Las Vegas, NV 702-383-0007 Open from 5pm-"until people stop comin' in" (usually around 9pm) Tuesday - Saturday Great skillet-fried chicken and mashed potatoes. I was somewhat disappointed with the fried chicken, but it was accompanied by the best biscuits I've ever eaten. Definitely not fancy, but interesting enough that you'll not forget it. If you've got to be a beach bum in Vegas, console yourself with biscuits at the Green Shack.

Restaurant Recommendation -- Las Vegas?

The Napa Restaurant at the Rio is considered by many to be the best restaurant in Las Vegas. I've had the Foie Gras appetizer (with apricot sauce, a friend says the blackberry is even better when available) and lamb there and they were excellent, but not on the menu last time I checked (just before Christmas). They also have a very extensive wine selection. Figure about $250 for two if you order a bottle of wine.
There's a Le Cirque and Aqua at Bellagio (haven't eaten at either one of them yet).
For more "everyday" dining, I can recommend Fiore and Buzios at the Rio, and The Palm and Spago at Caesars Forum Shops. For late-nite dining, I believe the Ruth's Chris on Flamingo is open until 3AM.

Da beach bum The impression I get is that Vegas has few really bad places to eat once you get past about $10/head. For example, we stayed at Treasure Island a couple of weeks ago, and except for the buffet, we were quite happy with all the meals we got there (and even the buffet was a reasonable value). In particular, we were especially happy with The Plank (which is supposed to be one notch below their flagship restaurant, Bucconeer Bay); both the service and the food were worth the $25/head (plus tax and tip) that we paid. We also tried the Mirage buffet next door and were quite happy with that for a couple bucks more per person. Finally, we went to the Texas Station BBQ, and were happy with that, though it was a bit overpriced. IOW, don't discard "hotel food" -- most of the mega resorts have restaurants to equal anything outside the hotels.

There are lots of good places to eat away from the hotels that aren't as pricey. Try asking some taxi drivers, that's how I found Shalimar. I also found an Ethiopian place that way too (it was very good, just not as spicy as I like), but can't remember the name. Glenn

Emeril Lagasse has an excellent New Orleans seafood restaurant at the MGM Grand. The Palm [Caesar's?--I forget] is a typical member of the chain that is my favorite for prime steaks. Julian Serrano, formerly of Masa's, has opened Picasso at the Bellagio; although I haven't tried it yet, his reputation warrants an investigation.
Warning: all these are very expensive.
