Reno has at least two Basque boardinghouse style restaurants. These are an institution unique to the West. If you haven't been to one, you should really try. (Unless you're a veggie or into "lite" food.) Prices are reasonable and the food is a mix of Basque and American. Check out Louis' Basque Corner and the Santa Fe Hotel, both in the downtown (Virginia St.) area. There may be one or two more.

For breakfast -- the only place to go is Heidi's (2 locations on Virginia St.) -- wonderful breads and home fries, and the waitresses are a kick! Definitely a locals hang out.

For dinner -- Houlihans (off McCarran and Plumb) Try the "baked potato soup!" Irish pub atmosphere, low lights, and lots of woodwork. Also one of the classiest bars in town. For extravagance, go to the French restaurant in the Peppermill casino, also on Virginia. They have a dessert cart that should rightly be called a Winnebago, and a selection of after dinner drinks that'll blow you away.

Under no circumstances go to the buffet at the Hilton. Instead, go north into Sparks to John Aswaga's Nugget casino, and get a preview of what the buffet in heaven looks like! Absolutely unbelievable in quality, and around $10/person.
