       Karen,

The Jefferson Avenue Boarding House is no longer in
business. The owner moved his operation to the Majestic Hotel, a small very nice hotel Downtown. However, I don't think he is operating the restaurant anymore. The food isn't particularly commendable, however the jazz is.

My recommendation for wonderful food is "Big Sky" in Webster
Groves (a close in suburb). Call for directions and reservations. Carefully prepared food presented with a flair. Try the fresh creamed spinach and the garlic mashed potatoes, along with any entree. Price is mid range-reasonable. Vegetables serve two.

BTW, I agree with your rec to try the Hill...

       Tom

Ah, I knew I remembered a nice place in St. Louis.

Mind you, I've been to St. Louis twice in my life, for a total of about a week, so this shouldn't be taken as any sort of recommendation relative to the rest of the city. I did have a very comfortable, well-prepared and well-served meal at Tony's, and thought it quite worth the money. (Of course, at the time I was living in Manhattan, so you can discount my feel for restaurant price levels as well.) The service was attentive, a little on the showy side but not pushy, and if there were flaws in the food they certainly didn't stick in my mind.

I always eat at Rigazzi's, on Daggett Street in the Italian neighborhood known as "The Hill." The prices are very reasonable. Try the lasagna or anything with clam sauce. One warning: Rigazzi's goes heavy on the garlic.

twists....also have always enjoyed Big Sky. Both have the same price and dress as Bar Italia. I like the ambiance at L.S Bistro better. For a more elegant atmosphere, Malmaison (sp?) in St.Albans has wonderful food and a great setting. A little bit of a commute by St.Louis standards but well worth the trip. The Hill has several great Italian restaurants such as Zia's (casual), Giovanni's (dressy) and Dominics (dressy) For excellent down-town dining, try Kemoll's - upscale Italian with a smokded salmon and dill pasta that is to die for. They have wonderful early bird specials which make it an affordable meal (I think before 6:00pm, but I would verify this. Let me know if you need anymore info (My hometown and I get homesick when I think of all my old haunts!)

There are some really fantastic restaurants in St. Louis. You definitely won't go hungry!

Try some of these:

*Royal Chinese Barbecue -- Kiwi Carlisle was right -- incredible food

*Rossino's -- Central West End -- good pizza -- neat atmosphere

*Blueberry Hill -- in the Loop -- great hamburgers -- neat place to see
-- don't miss the Elvis room!

*Bartolino's -- great Italian on the edge of the Hill -- off Hampton

*Riddle's -- near Washington University -- big menu

*Mr. B's -- another good Italian place on the Hill -- good prices, nice
waitresses -- incredible homemade salad dressing (creamy
garlic or Italian -- not sure what they call it)

Enjoy St. Louis! There's a lot to see and do, and the food is great. Take it from a native St. Louisan! Let me know if you come across any great places to eat.
