I wouldn't really call Tony's bad myself. I was once married to a waiter who worked at their "sister" restaurant (if you can call places owned by two brothers "sisters"), Anthony's, and sometimes subbed at Tony's, so I know something about their service, food and prices. It's Continental style, which is too pretentious for me most of the time, but dishes are usually fresh and well-prepared, though not in the latest rank of culinary fashion. The prices are very high, indeed. The service is too attentive for my taste, with hovering waiters and less privacy than I enjoy. However, "discretion" is one of their first rules. Vince Bommarito, the owner, told waiters more than once that they should never say to a customer "How nice to see you again" or "so soon", etc. if he or she was with someone who appeared to be a spouse or date, just in case their last visit had been with an illicit lover. Sigh. Frankly, if I could afford to eat at Tony's, I'd go to Fio's LaForchette and pocket the (fairly large) difference in price. spending money?
I feel you get do get good value based on the food and service. Granted, on our budget, it is not a regular dining location, but it is top notch. You pay for what you get. When I hear the prices at a place like Ruth Chris or Tony's, I feel it is quite competitive in that realm of restaurant. If I want a good steak at rock bottom prices, I go to the local butcher and grill it myself. My wife and I wend for our anniversary. To me it was worth it on that particular evening. Again, it is all subjective.
