Pueblo Solis

We tried Pueblo Solis (on Hampton at Delor) last night and were grievously disappointed. The place is so dim, you can hardly see your food, (possibly a blessing) and so crowded you can hardly move. They have tables shoved in every possible corner.

We ordered two classic dishes as a test, and both were awful. The chiles rellenos were flabby, greasy, and flavorless, with the cheese clotted into a mass at one end of the plate and the chiles hidden under fried batter at the other. The rice was bright orange and tasteless, the frijoles nearly liquid and ditto. The sauce on the mole poblano was tasty, but the chicken was dry as a bone. We decided that the mole was either from a jar or pre-made and the whole mess microwaved. The side order of "corn salsa" arrived steaming hot, and seemed to be a half can of tomatoes with green chiles and a half can of corn. ICK!

I could only eat a few bites of the chiles rellenos, and the waiter had them taken off our bill, which was nice. On our way out, the owner asked how everything was, and I told him I couldn't eat his chiles rellenos. His response was to ask if I'd had them there before. I said that we hadn't been there before, but that I'd had chiles rellenos many times in St. Louis, Houston, and Mexico, and that these weren't up to my standards.

I don't think we're likely to go back. Gorp. The food at Chuy Arzola's is better than that, which is exceedingly faint praise from one who lacks an inner gringo.

El Maguey in West County is fair-to-middlin'. I don't know if you'd be willing to drive from South County to Lafayette Square, but Arcelia's is worth the trip!

Our family likes Mi Lupita, little place in a strip mall at Manchester & New Ballwin. Very humble place and food not fancy, but prompt, nicely done and friendly.

I like El Maguey (I do eat there), but they are truly only "fair." Hacienda (Rock Hill) is not authentic or anything, but I think that their food is fantastic. The chunky salsa rocks. The beef chalupas rule. Don't order the HOUSE Margs. Pay extra for the top shelf. Of course, that applies to most places. The service is always great. We always end up tipping really good. One of the more "authentic" places, Zuzu (downtown Clayton) my wife and mother-in-law LOVE, but I didn't like.

If you like Mexican and you happen to be in the south part of town, you might like to try Pueblo Solis at Hampton and Delor (5700 Hampton?).

It's not real big, but we've (two) managed to be seated the three times we've been there, without reservations. All the usual Tex-Mex stuff, the difference is the quality of the preparation (refried beans & rice fixed three times a night by the owner's mother). I've had the Chilies Relleno twice now - good both times. They offer cheese and meat. The meat isn't quite what I'm use to - the filling is like a beef and potato hash - but good.

Last time I had a Tostada and an Enchilada (both excellent, no surprizes) and my dining companion had a vegie buritto that she said was outstanding. According to Al (the owner), the vegie buritto changes from time to time depending on what they can get that's fresh. Both dinners were priced at about $7.

FWIW, Salina's is supposed to be pretty good (At Clarkson-Wilson Center). I've eaten from Salina's Pronto off of 141 and 40 in the back strip mall, which I suppose is the same that they serve at their main location, but I can't offer comparison to a lot of the other little Mexican joints - I am no expert on it.

I'm sorta surprised - when PS first opened, it was fantastic. But, as has been posted here, things have slipped lately. It's puzzling, since Al Solis, even when he was a waiter back at Gian- Tony's, has always been a customer-oriented sort of guy. Even when I ran into him in Home Depot, he recognized me and asked how we were, just as if we'd stepped into the door of Pueblo Solis.

Early on, his mom was running the kitchen, and the food was always great. I don't know if there have been any changes lately behind the scenes, but in my past couple of visits, things have been quite a bit more ... variable. The guacamole on my last visit was pretty darned fiery, for example, and bland the time before that.

I'll probably go back at least once more, hoping that it's some sort of phase that will get fixed, but if we have another off- par meal, it may be the last. It would be a shame, since the place showed such promise.
