Yup; at least it started out as such when it came to St. Louis. There is still one in St. Charles and one in Brentwood; there was, at one time, a third in Florissant. I'm pretty sure it started out as a franchise and went to independent ownership when the parent company had problems.
To answer Kiwi's initial question -- you might try Bandana's in Arnold (much like Supersmokers in that they offer a variety of geographical styles); my favorite in St. Louis is a fairly rundown but delicious spot called Roscoe McCrary's, or maybe just McCrary's, a few blocks west of Crown Candy. Wonderful down-home soul food style 'cue, and an especially potent "hot" version of the sauce.

Good non-chain barbecue?
Kiwi: Try the following. Very small, only about 7-8 tables, only a few side orders. Best for takeout but I did eat there at lunch when visiting my sister this past April. We had been doing family history/genealogy at St. Louis Public Library. they seem to get a good lunch time crowd. Art & Wardy's Box Lunch Bar-B-Q Carryout 612 N. 11th [1/2 block north of Washington] Downtown St. Louis 314-436-9065 Mon-Fri: 10:30 - 7:00 Sat: 10:30 - 3:00 Leo Boberschmidt Kensington, MD [but grew up in Baden - many, many years ago (:-)] P.S. Coming from St. Louis, Bar-B-Q meant ribs. BIG surprise when I moved to Washington, DC area in 1964 and found out about southern BBQ. "What the heck is this coleslaw doing on my sandwich???" P.P.S. Kiki: I'm still working on the "St. Louis Dining Diary" for my trips this past April & October.
Someone wrote: : How about some recommendations for good, non-chain barbecue? I'm fond of Momma's coalpot, a little booth (and medium size smoker) in the Loop Market in UCity. When it's pleasant, you can picnic at the nearby tables. I've also taken stuff home -- the barbequed duck is a terrific variation. LEF

If you are not averse to driving, Super : Smokers out in Eureka, MO is very good. They serve both dry ribs as well as : pulled pork. The meat is smoked over applewood and there is a sixpack : sauces which you can place on the meat: Eastern Carolina vinegar based, KC : style, Texas style (which is slightly spicy), St. Louis style (very tomato), : South Carolina style mustard based, and their own special sauce. Their side dishes are pretty lame, tho. Best suggestion is to get your meat at Supersmokers and your sides practically next door at Phil's :) John [email removed]

Either come down 61/67 from the north (assuming you're coming from the St. Louis side), or get off 55 at the Arnold exit, go east to 61/67 and turn left, and it's about 8-10 blocks on the left (west side of the street) in a strip center. joe b.

Memphis. : : I believe they still exist in Tennessee Oh, there's a new place. Pit Master BBQ at Manchester and Sappingon (Rock Hill?(Next to Boston Market)). I'd say they're comparable to Supersmokers. Ribs, brisket, pulled pork, sausage, all served naked; sauces are at the tables. Looks and tastes good. *However*, use your own judgement as to the cleanliness of the place. It looked fine to me, but someone told me after I ate there that she saw them in the restaurant inspections column, cited for roaches. I didn't see any of those there. I'm sure all restaurants are cited for problems now and again. John "Who wishes Tennessee Jed's was still around" [email removed]
I think you mean 5th street in Eureka, as there is no Phil's in Fenton. Joe B. wrote: > Johann L. wrote: > >Supersmokers is located in Eureka and O'Fallon. I work near Rib Crib but avoid taking anyone there since quality can be uneven. Wanted to show off brats but they were overcooked; sauce is not especially good either. I've had OK meals but people I've taken there haven't liked it as much as some other places. We have a KC Masterpeice nearby too which tends to be polished but reliable. Will try Charlottes Rib on Manchester some day when I'm doing lunches again! Bill B. wrote: > I'll throw in my vote for the Rib Crib... Tim that would actually be South on 141 towards Arnold... North goes towards Fenton. Thanks for directions tho ... I live near 141 and will definitely follow my nose to Bandana's ... Actually tried Bandana's yesterday. It was good if you like the taste of smoke. My daughter said she preferred the taste of meat. I did like that fried corn on the cob. Anyone know how they do that? They wouldn't tell me......said it was a secret. Did not try the boiled peanuts, not brave enough.
