Gates and Sons. The best store is on Brooklyn. I wouldn't go after dark.

Winslow's. I don't remember where it is.

Some will recommend Arthur Bryant's. I think they suck. They cut brisket on an automatic slicer and don't give a sh*t if it's cut across the grain or not.

There are several others that I can't remember right now. I've only had 5 cups of coffee this morning.

Try Hayward's (or is it Heyward's) on the Kansas side.

I like Smokestack. Winslows is down in the farmers market area.

Gates and Bryants are probably the best known, but most Kansas Citians (including myself) will recommend Smokestack, Lil' Jake's, and Smokehouse.

Next weekend (Oct 1-2) is the American Royal - if you're in town, it's 'que paradise.

I second Hayward's, and also recommend Rosedale (a sweeter sauce) and Amazing Grace's, sold at the Grand Emporium, K.C.'s premiere blues bar.

You can go out once a week in KC and not cover all the resturants in several years. Most of them are pretty good. But the best I have eaten is Oklahoma Joe's in Shawnee Mission. You've fot to walk through a convienience store to get to it but it is worth the trip. Check the Yellow pages and you will be flabergasted at the variety. And by the way I have a friend that rates the BBQ resturants and the most expensive place to eat was in his opinion the worst. One good way to judge the quality is to go in and sit down. I you are handed a menu then you will not get the best. If the menu is hand written on the wall then get ready for a pleasent suprise. Try Oklahoma Joe's, you won't regret it.
