Lots of character. It's at 767 Raymond Avenue. Exit I-94 at Cretin-Vandalia, go north to University, go west in University about 4 blocks to Raymond. Hang a right and Keys will be on your left. There's a Keys near downtown St. Paul, but it's a pale imitation of the one on Raymond. Dave Keys Bakery and Cafe 767 Raymond Ave St Paul, MN 55114 (651) 646-5756

Solid greasy spoon. Great hash browns, etc. Cheap too.

It's called La Bodega... the snails + potatoes in a spicy tomato sauce was the best -- snails were tender, the sauce provided decent heat cumulativity -- not overwhelming by the time you've eaten enough. The quail was the worst -- it was tough and fishy (?!) and just all wrong. Other highlights: asparagus with some kind of spanish cheese melted over it; croquetas; shrimp in garlic sauce. Other lowlights: the olive plate. The tiramisu was all right but not decadent, so I wouldn't order it again. Coffee was good -- the best I've had today. The service was good too. Not terribly attentive and we did wait a while before asking for the check, but I think we were being used to make the place look busier that it was. That was fine with me, although after two hours the wood chairs were starting to make some people in our party uncomfortable. The decor is spare and simple. I like the way the place is laid out, a large dining room with a bar to the side, and another smaller room along Lake Street where you can see and be seen. I will not comment on the art that was on the walls except to say that it was overpriced. The food wasn't though -- dinner for three came to $90 with tax & tip. I didn't ask (I can be shy you know) but I do think this is a new restaurant and that the reason it wasn't busier is just that people haven't heard about it, don't know what it is, or if it's any good. I would encourage anyone who's slightly inclined to give it a try. La Bodega 3005 Lyndale Ave S (Lake & Lyndale) Minneapolis, MN
