Alas, neither of these recommendations will probably work for him, since I can't see one having a decent dinner at one of these places and then driving quickly all the way to downtown to catch a show.

Alas, downtown St Paul isn't exactly known for it's nightlife, but here are my recommendations:

Pazzaluna, 360 St Peter Street. Upscale Italian Chic cuisine, but a bit spendy.

Sakura, 350 St Peter Street. Good Japanese restaurant, decent sushi.

Great Waters Brewing Company, 426 St Peter St. Nice brewpub.

St Paul Grill, 350 Market St. Pricey, but excellent.

All of these are easy walking distance from the Ordway.

That seems a bit far away from downtown Saint Paul to me. Only if I lived in Uptown would I want to eat in Uptown & then go to a show in dSP

For something interesting, I believe there's a Kurdish restaurant (the first & possibly only in the country) in dSP. I haven't gone there, though (I always forget about it), nor can I produce further details, but it can't be too hard to find.
