I spend 3-5 nights a week in Detroit resaurants! You need to hang out near Wayne State University.

Casual:
The Union Street (on Woodward Ave)
Casual bar atmosphere, great food (pastas, fish, etc),
Average $6-18 per entree, cool place to drink.

  Stewarts (on Woodward Ave)
A little less bar like and a little more restaurant like.
Awesome food! Average $8-20 per entree. Comfortable setting.

  Majestyk Cafe (on Woodward Ave)
Don't know the menu cuz they just got a new Chef.
I know the Chef though and he can cook!!
Cool place to hang out and drink.

American Pizza Cafe (on Woodward Ave)
Right next to the Fox Theatre and Second City. Great
pizza and other Italian dishes. Casual and inexpensive.

Nicer:
  The Whitney (on Woodward Ave)
Expensive! Strictly suit and tie! The interior is awesome!
At the very least, go in for a drink and check the place out.

The Courthouse Brasserie (on Brush St)
The best food in Detroit (IMHO). A little nicer but not necessarily
suit and tie. Average $12-25 per entree. Strictly non-smoking.

There are plenty of others! This is just a sampling! I haven't even discussed Greek Town or Mexican Town.

The Westin Hotel is in the Renaissance Center and the restaurant is called the "Summit". The food is excellent! It's a little on the impersonal side if you're looking for a cool hang out.

Definitely make sure you go to "Fishbone's" restaurant. They have excellent Creole food. The atmosphere is very nice. It is a pastime among visitors to write there name on the walls! Another nice feature is the world's (country's?) tallest indoor waterfall. Very eyecatching and nice to take pictures in front of. The only catch is that on the weekends, I've come across a wait as long as 1 1/2 hours. It's worth it, though. Fishbone's is located in the heart of Greektown in downtown Detroit on Monroe (right across from a bar called Marilyn's on Monroe -- catchy, huh?)

Another good place to get a really good place to eat (it's not really a restaurant but it has excellent corned beef sandwiches) is Lou's Deli near Livernois & Wyoming on the west side of Detorit. I'm not sure of the exact address.

Happy trails -- Detroit is a nice place (IMHBiasedO).

Peace............

I know this response is waaay too late for the original inquiry, but a couple of weeks ago my wife and I joined my son and his wife for dinner at The Mongloian Barbeque in Royal Oak. This place is certainly not haute cuisine, but it offered a tasty and memorable meal. It's kind of a build-your-own entree which is then cooked on a giant grille ala Ron's of Japan. I'd go again.
