If you are truly interested in dinig pleasure then my advice is to miss every
 dining spot in Cancun.

Not EVERY dining spot. the Ritz Carlton has two fine resaurants; a somewhat
casual (for the Ritz), and a formal dining room. Both were excellent.

With the above exception, I will concede that fine dining in Cancun is a
 challenge.

Good Luck

I think it is Carlos and Charlies that Kristin is trying to remember. Seems like that was the place with witty combinations like "Moo, Peep, Oink". It was a fun place and good food too.

I don't agree with the "challenge" Have a look at la dolce vita ,fisheria, casa rolandi , and lots of the bigger hotels are great with their offered variety and delicatesse! Bernhard Pfennigschmidt http://www.cancun.com/

Downtown, La Habichuela (Margaritas 25 ยท Cancun, 998-884-3158) is superb by any standard. It's also pretty expensive. Many standard dishes, but also regional oddities -- like a dish made from a fungus that grows oin the corn plant. Excellent flambeed desserts. The one "don't miss" place in Cancun for foodies.

There's also a very unpresuming restaurant right across the street from Carlos and Charlies, at (I think) Plaza Kukulkan, 7km, in the shopping center, which serves outstanding traditional Yucatan-style whole fish.

Lorenzillo's, a little further down Kukulkan on the bay side, has
*excellent* seafood, a hangs out over the bay. Beautiful at sunset!

Savio's is southern Italian, possibly the best in Cancun, but not up to the standards of Italian in any large US city. I wouldn't recommend it. There is no really good Italian in Cancun (duh).

There are a few great places right on the beach (literally, in the sand) on Isla Mujeres, too. Well worth the trip.

Have a good time!
