I'm sorry, I can't recommend anything on the North Shore, but I can
give you some places in town.

For Vietnamese food, I like Ba Dat and Pho Pasteur in Chinatown.
Ba Dat is on Harrison, Pho Pasteur is on Washington and also on
Kneeland. Most of the Vietnamese places in Chinatown will do a
decent bowl of pho, bun, or whatever on rice. If I were taking
some people with me, I would definitely go to Pho Pasteur in
Allston, because it is bigger. Pho Pasteur has several locations
around town, all with the same menu, but I have found that the
Chinatown locations sometimes don't serve some of the stuff
that's on the menu, so I choose the Allston location.

I am not familiar with Malaysian food, but there are several
options. Pandan Leaf on Harvard Street in Coolidge Corner,
Brookline, is one (www.digiworld.com/pandan), and Penang on
Washington Street in Chinatown is another. Both are well spoken of.

The Andover Inn is a nice place which serves Ristaffael on Sunday evenings. The place is run by a Dutchman who lived in Malaysia and the rest is very classical for a reservation.
