Takeshima on Harvard St. in Brookline is said to
be among the best in the area. Can't testify
myself, though - not a japanese food fan.
Guihama (Guyhama - sp?) is said to be good too.
 Zagat's backs both.

 Good luck

My favorite was always Guyhana, on Boylston St. It's open until 2:00am
every night, and is "Rock and Roll Sushi" from 11pm-2am. Before that,
it's a very traditional sushi bar and Japanese restaurant. There's
a Japanese noodle restaurant in Kendall Square, called Goeman, which
is affordable and the food is very filling. I believe I saw another
of these somewhere near Symphony Hall, but don't remember exactly where.

Just jump on the T and go up to Porter Square.

The Porter exchange on Mass Ave near the Cambridge/Somerville
line is chock full of Japanese restaurants and business -- you've
got at least 5 small cafe style places and one full size restaurant
 from which to choose.
