christopher's is a pretty good bar food type place with cambridge
attitude. good salads, burgers, some mexican, etc. fairly wide menu and
not pricey.
porter cafe is good bbq but your atlanta taste may not grok ne style.
lotsa little japanese places in the old sears building (porter
exchange). also the cottonwood cafe a trendy southwestern place.
some like more than others.
nearby davis sq has more choices like redbones (good but not great bbq)
gargoyles (continental and very good), rosebud (diner/bar lotsa
choices), johnny d's (funky and good night club, good food too).

Good food around Porter Square?
Elephant Walk (Mass Ave, just outside Porter Sq.) has terrific Cambodian food. Probably my favorite restaurant in the immediate Porter Sq area. As Uri pointed out, the den of little Japanese restaurants in Porter Excahnge is well worth a visit. I'd take a big pass on Christopher's - I finally gave up on it a few years ago - mediocre food and REALLY bad service. Have they changed? Toad next door is a bar, not a restaurant, but has good music at night Anna's Taqueria just opened (on ???Summer??? St.). I haven't been to this location yet, but the one in Brookline has tasty and cheap taco-type food. Also, as pointed out, Davis Sq is a lot more of a hopping place, both in terms of food and music. Steve PS - If you want good bbq, pass on Redbones and go out Mass ave to Arlington where Blue STar BBQ is located. MUCH better food. On the otherhand, if you enjoy good beer, Redbones is one of the best beer bars in the area. ___ ___ The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet - Free!

Does that mean that the Boston Market is gone? It's not a huge loss for me, but it is a bit of a surprise. Oh, and to follow up on the original question, other nice places in Davis square are the Blue Shirt, which does wraps, and Picante, another taqueria. There's also a Carberry's (breads and sandwiches), but I was fairly unimpressed by the service the last time I went there.

If by "funky ethnic" you mean that sort of "eclectic" trendoid rot that tries to rip off every cuisine on the planet in search of something new to appeal to the public's jaded palate, I'm resolutely against it and so can't advise you ;-) If you mean real ethnic, well...depends on what kind ethnic you're looking for. My Porter Square faves are: Forest Cafe/Mexican Cuisine 1682 Mass Ave This is Yucatan Mexican food. I've loved every meal I've eaten here. I wish this place was in my neighborhood. Porter Exchange 1815 Mass Ave Try any of the Japanese food stall places, esp. the sushi bar. Porter House Cafe 1933 Mass Ave Barbecue. I haven't been in a few years, but I have enjoyed it every time I went. Indian Club 1755 Mass Ave Great pun, huh? Quite decent north Indian cuisine.
While the food generally tasted good the 2 times I went to Chang Sho, I
think that the 2nd time I went there I got food poisoning. I haven't had
sweet and sour chicken since august (and I haven't been back to chang sho).
Ugh.

Kind of out of the way--in that vast no-man's land called the Cambridge-Somerville border. & Sadly, they don't have a liquor license & I really enjoy quaffing a nice cold one with my meal. Actually, my new favorite restaurant for Chinese is Chef Lee's on Beacon St., outside of Porter heading toward Inman. they are a small "joint" but they do really well with preparing the standard dishes. We used to go across the street to Chang Feng, but their quality went way down about a year or so ago. Anyway, give Chef Lee's a try. They do the usuals, but they do them well.
