I'd say the Village Restaurant in Essex Mass.

There are also a number of good places on the Waterfront in York Beach, and Wells Maine.

I prefer a non-greasy fried clam that's somewhat crisp but still moist, with a creamy belly.

I find Woodman's in Essex to be a tad greasy.

Reasonably good fried clams nearer me can be found at:

Captain Marden's Takeaway in Wellesley
The Takeaway in Norwood
Wright's Seafood in Needham

FWIW, Legal Seafood probably has very good fried clams, but the place is overpriced, so I don't think about it very often.

Finding good fried onion rings is a good test for good fried clams, but there are few places that make great fried onion rings.

The fried clams and fried onion rings in Maine in Wells at a restaurant (whose name I cannot remember) on Mile Rd are great. I usually get a lobster roll there though, because their lobster rolls are the best. This restaurant is the one that's on tv in one of those vacuum commercials. Damn, I just cannot pull up the name. Ahah, It's Billy's Chowder House.

When I get up to the area on business (I live in DC now), I satisfy my fried clam craving at Stelio's in Wilmington. I think they're among the best I've ever had, though that might be partly nostalgia since I used to live near there. Anyone know any place in the DC area to get real fried clams (with bellies!)?
