So where have you folks been eating?

We had a cheap, fast and good dinner on Friday night at
a tiny place in Allston called Cafe Habibi.

We had planned to take out, but there was no one there
when we arrived - they only have 4 tables - and the chef
looked lonely, so we stayed to eat and chat.

We've always enjoyed chatting with the owner, Gulfam, and
the chef. But the chef told us that Gulfam sold the place
6 months ago! But the new owner came in later and seemed
nice, and the food was still amazing, so all seems well.

You can see the menu at http://www.geocities.com/cafehabibi/

They also have a special list of Dosas.

We started with chicken pakoras, which come with 3 sauces. It
was the usual brown tamarind sauce and the white raita,
but also included a new ginger garlic sauce that was hot
and good. The pakoras were very light and crisp.

We had aloo nan, the pototo bread. It comes right off the
 skillet and is incredible.

Then we tried the lamb saag and the chicken tikka masala
over biryana rice. Both were the best version we've had
anywhere - rice sauce, great spicing just as we ordered...

We had fun watching the sattelite TV with what looked like
an Indian telethon. Lots of singers and jokes we did not
comprehend, but it looked like fun.

Some other customers arrived to keep them company, so we
got a garlic nan to go...and left full and happy!

I finally got to try Rein's Deli.. and loved it! I was taking my mom home to NJ.. and I said there were a few good diners along I-84.. and then I saw the Rein's Deli sign. When we got off the exit, there was a Vietnamese restaurant (Lotus) that my mom wanted to try instead, but they didn't open for another 30 minutes, and we were both quite hungry.. so Rein's it was.. which I wanted to try anyway.

Synopsis: Really, really good egg creams. I had two, vanilla. Chocolate pecan pie, served warm, was dense, chocolatey, but not overly rich or sweet. I had the "Husky".. pastrami, corned beef and salami with cole slaw and Russian dressing.. on rye, of course. Excellent. My mom had a hot corned beef sandwich and loved it as well. We both had a cup of the excellent cream of broccoli soup, which was the soup du jour.

Will definitely go again.. and now my wife wants to try it. I love the fact that it's open 7 am til midnight 7 days a week.

Other food I ate was in NJ restaurants, so really doesn't apply here. :)
