I just came back from a two week vacation in Boston. I thought I would offer
some feedback on some Boston restaurants I ate at.
1. Papa Razzi (Chestnut Hill Mall)
Outstanding Italian restaurant. Unusual appetizers. Tasty lobster
ravioli. Fresh parmesan cheese grated in front of you. Thumbs up.
Highly recommended.
2. Thai House (on Commonwealth Ave.)
Good Thai food. I was told by my Boston friends that it was the second
best Thai restaurant in Boston. They said Bangkok Cuisine was #1.
I liked the yellow and red curries at the Thai House. The appetizers
were very good. The only disappointment was the Thai ice tea. Overall,
a thumbs up.
3. Dynasty (on Edinboro St. in Chinatown)
Outstanding dim sum. Best I've ever had. I was told this restaurant
is being boycotted because of employee mistreatment by owners (like
not paying salaries occasionally). I liked the food though.
4. Blue Room (1 Kendall Square)
Major disappointment. A definite thumbs down. The lasagna was too oily.
The meats were hard. Too much salt and seasoning. The only strong
point was the excellent wine list.
5. No Names (Fish Pier)
Good seafood chowder. Average seafood entrees. Extremely poor service.
The tables are territorial. Since I was the second customer, I noticed
all the empty window seats. However, a waiter seats me in front of a
wooden beam with no view. A minute later I moved myself to the
window area. The original waiter returns and argues with another
waiter that he stole his customer. The second waiter says, "Customer
no like you". To reiterate, extremely poor service.

[skipping the ones I haven't eaten at]

The Dynasty's dim sum always used to be good in my opinion, but I was last
there before word came out about the labor troubles (which was, if memory
serves, at least two years ago). You could have had better, however, if
you'd taken a short walk over to Tyler Street and the China Pearl.

I also didn't like the Blue Room, and I was starting to think I was the only
person on the planet who felt this way. I only went once and it was a little
on the pricey side and nauseatingly trendy. These are faults that can be
overlooked if the food's great, but it wasn't...just kinda average. All
in all, I thought it was seriously overrated.

That's the No Name, all right. In a funny kind of way, it has the exact
same problem as the Blue Room: it's got some serious flaws that could be
overlooked if the food were great, but it just isn't anymore. Nowadays
it seems that to get really good seafood in Boston you have to either
spend some serious bucks, or (my preferred solution) go to Chinatown.Try The Daily Catch on Hanover Street in the North End, especially if you like squid and garlic. Dive City a la nice dry white wine in paper cup and good calamari! Adam
