There is a good Mexican Restaurant (tends toward seafood) on Mass Ave between Porter and Harvard Sq, Forrest Cafe/Mexican Cuisine. It is about 3-5 blocks from Harvard Sq. About 2 blocks further down is a burrito shop that is fairly cheap. I do not remember the name of it. (Both are them are on your left if you are going from Harvard Square.)

Beantown Cheap Eats (burritos?)

I agree with the other response that that Mexican Cuisine at the Forest Cafe is a winner. Another possibility would be The Border Cafe which is right in Harvard Square. The food is cheap, but quite good. The atmosphere is party-like (i.e. crowded, noisy, fun). The food at The Border is Tex-Mex (good jambalaya & fajitas). The food at Mexican Cuisine is authentic "Mexican" mexican - specifically from the Yucutan Penninsula area (I think). It is a much smaller, and much more subdued place, but the food is perhaps more "haute". I like both places. There is also Sol Azteca in Brookline, not that far from Fenway Park. Also subdued, the food is very good and more Mexican than Tex-Mex. Have fun! - David

For cheap but very good tacos, burritos, etc try Picante Mexican Grill. One in Davis Square Somerville and one on Mass Ave in Cambridge. Both not far from Harvard Square. They have a salsa bar where you can choose from among about a half-dozen homemade salsas.

In *addition* to good Tex-Mex the Border Cafe has very good jambalaya. - David

Having eaten at Sol Azteca last March, I can safely say that the food is -nothing- close to Mexican. Awful, horrible, disgusting. And according to the guidebook I was looking at, this was supposed to be one of the better Mexican places in the Boston area. - Anita ===================================== Anita Epler [email removed] Project Leader, MacUser/MacWEEK ZD Labs/Ziff-Davis Publishing Company Foster City, California ------------------------------------- All opinions expressed are my own -------------------------------------

The Border Cafe tends to be rather noisy and : student-y and I don't think their food's all that good...sort of a : Bennigan's with a quasi-tex-mex/cajun slant. Mexican Cuisine, on the : other hand, serves great food, but a burrito joint it ain't. Try Boca : Grande, which is on the same side of Mass Ave as Mexican Cuisine and : within a couple of blocks, or Picante, which has locations in Davis : Square and Central Square. Though I haven't tried it yet, initial reports from the newly opened California Burrito Company on Eliot Street in Harvard Square have been very favorable. The place I usually go for *very* inexpensive Mexican food is Tanqueria Mexico at 139 Prospect Street in Waltham. The place is kind of a dive, but the burritos are fairly large, the "liquados" (banana, made fresh is especially good) are great, and the prices are probably cheaper than Taco Bell. The large Mexican cliental is also probably a good indicator. The only thing I don't care for is their corn tortillas which tend to be gritty, fall apart easily, and not quite to my taste. So I usually ask that they put my meal in a flour tortilla. - David
