The MD eastern shore has the best local style crabs (soft or hard shell), if your definition of "the DC area" is broad enough. Try the Crab Claw (St. Michaels) or the Phillips' at the beach.

Tara Thai (Vienna and Bethesda) softshell crabs are wonderful, but (obviously) not local style.

Best crabs, hard and soft shell, are at Robertson's at Pope's Creek, south of Waldorf, Md. Worth the trip!
